You think Windows Vista Aero is cool?

I’ve used Beryl, and it’s a bear to configure. It’s also not all that user friendly. There are hundreds of configuration options and the help files pretty much suck. An example would be an option for the skydome (which I still don’t know what it is), and the help button would say “Enables Skydome”. Gee, that was helpful!
Beryl will work on older hardware (an advantage over Aero) and it’s free (another advantage). But getting it work will cost you time; something Aero will probably not do.

If Beryl is seems overwhelming in its configuration options, it might be good to remember that you can save all your settings as a profile, and also import other people’s profiles. You can download them from the beryl forums and, IIRC, gnome-look.org.

Beryl has never been hard to configure. I read the forums and get help from those who know how it works. I guess if you don’t know anything about forums or asking someone else for help, then it could be hard to configure. Out of the box, all of the eye candy and tricks are there, so one just has to be smarter than the computer and enjoy the experience.
Most windows users have a hard time with clicking a few boxes and give up after they see that one must actually interact with the program to get what they want.
If you haven’t tried Beryl lately, then re install it. It has become much easier and is actually very intuative. Check out the forums at
